Bees, Sheep & Community Activities

Hello Neighbor,
Fall is finally here. School is back in session, harvest is underway, and sweater weather will soon return. Meanwhile, planning for Harvey Solar continues as we prepare for early construction activities, including site preparation, grading, and development of a laydown yard for equipment and materials. We will share more details about the project schedule as plans move forward.
As part of our commitment to keeping you informed, each month we’ll share updates on key project activities and highlight how we’re supporting our neighbors and caring for the environment.
Sheep, Bees and Stewardship in Ohio
Sustainability and land stewardship are key values of Leeward Renewable Energy’s (LRE) and Harvey Solar. We work to ensure every decision and innovation at our projects echoes our commitment to a cleaner, brighter future.
Some great examples of our land stewardship commitment are present here in Ohio. Our Big Plain Solar facility in Madison County includes a 70-acre dedicated pollinator field as well as 60 beehives holding 3 million bees that support increased flowering plants, cleaner air, and the prevention of soil erosion. Big Plain is also one of several LRE solar projects to practice agrivoltaics, combining agriculture with energy production. More than 800 sheep are on site helping manage the project’s vegetation while improving soil health. Here are links to videos showcasing both the sheep and bees at Big Plain Solar.
Licking County River Round Up
For the past 31 years, the Licking County Soil and Water Conservation District has held its annual River Round Up, a county-wide river cleanup of the Licking River and its tributaries. Harvey Solar served as a Gold Sponsor for this year’s event and signed up to volunteer, though September’s Round-up was unfortunately cancelled due to stormy weather. Each year hundreds of volunteers canvass the Licking River waters to remove trash and debris to help continue the restoration of this important Ohio river system.
Licking County Farm Bureau, Student Scholarship Fundraiser
Harvey Solar was proud to serve as a sponsor for this year’s Wine Craze Corn Maze fundraiser hosted at Van Buren Acres in Hebron. The annual event features wine tastings, live music and a corn maze to support a great cause, the Licking County Farm Bureau Scholarship Fund, which awards scholarships to the next generation of youth pursuing careers in agriculture. We all got a little wet when the dark clouds let loose, but it didn’t dampen any of the fun.
